"New" South Africa?

Ok, at the risk of getting myself in huge trouble here, I'm trying to apply for a new job and I've gone through an employment agency. The latest job offer sounded amazing - in an area I love, great salary and the job description covered everything I want to do.
Below is the "reasoning" behind why I didn't get an interview for the position:
"unfortunately they are only looking at candidates of “colour” at the moment and only if they are not successful then they will look at other candidates. They said that otherwise for now we need to regret the “White” candidates. "

This is a controversial subject - I understand that they're trying to "correct" South Africa's history, but shouldn't employment be about hiring the best person for the job??
The first time I heard about apartheid was in History class at high school! Most of my junior school years were with mixed classmates - that is how I grew up. And this was before 1994...
We're supposed to a free and fair democracy aren't we? It's a fine line between "affirmative action" and discrimination. And given our history, South African companies really should know better.
